Contrary to popular belief, this treatment is not painful - but rather boring from the patient's perspective - as profound anesthesia is accomplished in the vast majority of cases, very much the same as for any other dental procedure.
The treatment involves accessing the space inside the tooth where the nerve is (the root canal system per se), cleaning out this space, and then sealing it up with an inert material so that it cannot be re-populated by bacteria.
A root canal treated tooth will most often require a crown for structural reinforcement reasons. In the case of a tooth that already has a crown prior to the root canal treatment, the original crown can often be preserved.
